DEWALT D55146 4-1/2-Gallon 200-PSI Hand Carry Compressor with Wheels
A friend of mine runs his own workshop and he was looking to replace is favorite air compressor that had unfortunately seen its last job. He contacted me to find out which portable air compressors I would recommend. I told him that I was just about to do a comparison review of what I considered were the top 10 air compressors on the market and that I would let him know the result.

An Outstanding Compressor
What sells a compressor is the right mixture of high power and features at the right price. The Dewalt D55146 fits this description perfectly and it is not surprising that it is so popular. The 200 PSI and 5.2 SCFM at 90 PSI provides power to spare for most applications. When I compared the Dewalt D55146 versus the other main compressors in the same price range such as those from Porter Cable, Rigid, Makita and Senco, there was no doubting that this was the one that had everything.
This is a heavy duty 4.5 gallon compressor that is constructed to withstand the harshest jobsite conditions.
Ease of Use
One of the best features of the D55146 is the way it fills its four and one half gallon air tank at such a very fast rate. Even from a cold start it only takes 40 seconds or so fill the tank from empty to 200 PSI. On top of that is the very fast recovery time which is the most important thing to most people so that you don’t have to wait around for it to refill itself. When I speak to compressor users, the thing that is most annoying is a compressor that continually runs low on air.
The Dewalt D55146 just does the simple things so well - it keeps the air flowing and air tank well replenished. Its performance puts it at the top of its class when it comes to power, useful features and overall quality. Considering its power the pump runs at a relatively low speed of 1,750 rpm and this helps to relieve the stress on the pump and brings about better durability and longer life.
Portability
A word now about those wheels. If only every compressor had the big Strong 10-inch pneumatic wheels that the D55146 has. It is so easy to move around and the vertical stand feature saves space by allowing you to transport and store the compressor in a vertical position. In addition to the wheels there are two big handles to enable you to, lift, carry and roll it wherever you want. This compressor might be heavier than some other compressors but with those wheels your life is made so much easier.
High Power but with Low Noise
For such a high power compressor it really is low noise. In general air compressors can be noisy beasts but this one has certainly been tamed and the noise is lower than compressors with half the power. One of the secrets is the low rpm of the motor. It almost comes as a surprise then how this compressor never loses pressure to nail guns before the motor kicks on again - ever. With comparable compressors you might find that after a dozen or so shots with a framing nailer the pressure would drop and the nails won’t shoot properly into the wood. With the D55146 however, the motor kicks in at about 160 psi, and because it pressurizes to 200 psi, you get a guaranteed consistent pressure through the hose.
